In villages and towns in Ukraine, you have two careers - your regular job, as well as farmer - grow vegetables, fruits, and raise animals - chickens, pigs, ducks, geese, cows. Here's a photo of my hostess pulling feathers from a chicken,

THESE HANDS are those of a full time school teacher who just came home from teaching all day, to kill her own chicken for dinner, raise her own crops and prepare lessons for the next day. Not a moment's rest, and not enough chickens. Most days are just potatoes, or skipped meals. Many are even worse off.
