What was destroyed are their lives, livelihoods, their homes and familiar surroundings, their connections to friends and family, schools for their children and more.
Now having to live crowded in one large hospital room without electricity or water, and go outside in the cold to cook over an open flame. Lack of sanitation and water means much illness. Living just outside the war zone, grateful to be alive, because the war zone is peppered with land mines and no one will risk taking anyone out now.
They need our help to gain food, medicine and leave to get further away, as they are just barely outside the war zone.
Many are frightened single mothers who need to care for children and survive this horror. Many young husbands have been killed in this war, leaving the vulnerable alone. Many elderly with few resources and huge medical needs need help.
